Knife-wielding attackers slit the throats of three people at a Christian publishing house in conservative eastern Turkey yesterday.
One of the dead men was of German origin, the local governor said. Two other men were taken to hospital, one with knife wounds to his throat, back and stomach, the other with a head injury after jumping from a third-floor window to escape. The hospital in the town of Malatya said that both were in a critical condition.
Police have detained four men for the attack, which took place in the early afternoon. Television footage showed a policeman tackling one man while another man covered in blood was carried to an ambulance on a stretcher.
The killings came less than three months after the murder of a prominent Armenian journalist.
The Zirve publishing house, which the Turkish media says is owned by two South Africans, Gert Martinus de Lange and Stephen Smithdorf, had been the target of nationalist protests for allegedly distributing Bibles and proselytising.
Halil Ibrahim Dasoz, the Governor of Malatya, said the authorities were also investigating possible Islamist links, because the method of killing was reminiscent of attacks by the Turkish arm of the militant Islamist group Hezbollah.
Officials from Zirve say they had been the target of threats for some time and had been intending to ask for protection. They deny any missionary aims.
Martin de Langue, a former official, reportedly said two years ago that the public in Malatya was being provoked against Christians and foreigners. The small community of Turkish Protestant Christians, as opposed to Greek and Armenian minorities, comprises eager converts with a missionary bent. Although proselytising is not illegal in mainly Muslim Turkey it is regarded with hostility.
The attack came as two Turkish evangelical Christians in Istanbul attended a hearing of their trial under the notorious article 301 of the penal code, which the West condemns as a restriction on expression, after being accused by nationalists of insulting Turkey and Islam.
The European Commission has condemned the attack as “horrendous”. The EC has long called on Turkey to offer better protection and rights for its minorities.
The attack comes at a time of great tension in Turkey over secularist worries that the Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a former Islamist firebrand who now says he is a conservative democrat, will announce he is running for President in next month’s elections. This would cement the grip of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) on the top jobs in the land. Hundreds of thousands of secularists marched at the weekend to prevent what they believe would result in an assault on the secular nature of the state.
The AKP MP for Malatya said the attack in his constituency could have been an act of provocation aimed at creating greater turmoil.
“There are people within Turkey who want extraordinary tension to reign in the country,” the MP. Munir Erkal, said.
Threat to faith
There are 100,000 Christians in Turkey. Last year two employees of a Bible correspondence course were charged with insulting Turkishness". It was alleged they were bribing Muslims to convert, promoting promiscuity and denigrating the Turkish army. Odemis Protestant Church in Izmir was attacked with Molotov cocktails in November.

It is sad what happened to our dear Christian brothers they paid the highest price for there faith, but we no they are far better off then us here. They are with our Dear Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. As Christians we should not be surprised of what is happening for surely like the Lord said on the cross "they do not know what they are doing." We know the hope that we have in Christ and we long for the great day when we are reunited with HIM!!

Here is an eyewitness account of the funeral of these 3 martyrs. Because of this evil deed the whole nation of Turkey was able to hear the gospel. Do these people sound like rapists & murderers? People in the Islamic world have to understand that, because one is white & born in a western nation & not a Muslim, that does not automatically make them a Christian. A Christian is someone who has made a conscious decision to follow Christ. If this decision is genuine then a transformation occurs in their lives. What was said and done at this funeral is evidence of this transformation.

René, Dar al Harb,
I know Christians have asked for prayer, to be able to stand strong in the midst of persecution. We must love our enemies. Just governments have the job protecting the innocent. Unjust governments put in power those who have placed wealth and personal gain ahead of freedom, even if the purveyors of truth supported them. Being born again means having a personal relationship with the One who gives real meaning and purpose. A sword can never stop that. Ultimate Truth is found in the one who said from the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." He said that we shall encounter things such as the missionaries and translators encountered. How can we forget that? The lazy-minded Brits need to think again, like the trenchant Muggeridge or deep C.S. Lewis...lest they become worse than the American couch potatoes. Get up and fight and use the armor of God!

every Christian should boycott Turkey. The west should make it known that turkey is an evil place. Turkey should not be allowed to join the E.U
aul, london, England
The military in Turkey does not want the country to join the EU. This is because the generals currently enjoy privileges and have control over the country's internal affairs that will miss if the country joins. Turkeys law system is set up in a way that protects the military and violates human rights. It punishes anyone who goes against the military and inhibits freedom of expression. There is no such country in the EU where the military runs the country. Turkey will not be an exception.
Steven Cox, Surrey, UK
Scenes like the one in Malatya are becoming very frequent in turkey these days. The current pro- Islamic government shouldnt be necessarily blamed as this looks very much like the work of the Turkish nationalists, which there are a lot of in Malatya. These religious fascists are allowed to run riot and attack and kill who ever they want as they are protecting Ataturks Turkish state. These religious fascists are allowed to get away with everything, beating leftist protesters to death because they protest against the state, attack and kill Kurdish students at universities because are seen as separatist, basicly kill anyone who they see as a threat to the great Turkish state The poor victims had been threatened and their premises bombed previously, what has the police done??? Ill bet anything that the murderers will turn out to be under 18!!! Like the guy who murderer the priest in Trabzon, like the killers of Hirant Dink like all the murderers supported by the deep-state in turkey

By Sallyn "I have to state that christians killed and raped Muslims in Bosnia herzegovina, and all developed countires just watched it."
So what you are saying is these Chrisians in Turkey had somthing to do with what happened in Bosnia and they got what was coming to them? WOW!
Plus how did the Bosnia leader get arested? All the developed countries did not have anything to do with that?
Clint Stephens, Waskom, Texas
Grant ,Guildford. The answer is anywhere. There are a lot of Muslim Schools, Mosques etc. here in Houston Even if there were only one, it would be more than there are Churches in the whole of Saudi Arabia.. Try and practise any religion in Muslim lands and see what happens. Look up Dhimmitude as well.. I concur with all of the other respondents, the Army is their, and our only hope.
Desmond Taylor, Houston, USA Texas
why can't you feel sad for humans being killed? instead of bringing civizilation, EU etc? you can take your EU and keep it, most of Turks do not want to be in EU anymore anyway.
It is always your selfish thoughts matter even in the awful event!
Korean person who killed more than 30 people said he is like JESUS, and he is a christian, so that means All the christians are evil?? or intolerant?
How about the Turkish family who burned to death 10 years ago by neo-nazis in Germany?? I mean there are so many examples.
how about British, italians what they are doing in Iraq? you call that a civilized response? killing women, children? what business Italians, British have in being in Iraq except Oil. so let's all be sad and protest awful things but don't blame whole populations.
Peace.

In and around Detroit is as good as any a place. A high number of American muslims live and work there, and have been totally integrated into the American way of life for many years!
Derek laird, Edinburgh, Lothian
This is teerible. It is impossible to believe that atrocities against Christians should be allowed to continue without retaliation from the Christian World. There is no way that we must sit back and allow Muslims to go round the globe and kill Chrisitians at the rate they are doing so. What are Christian Leaders doing to stop this may I enquire??

Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Rom 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I totally I agree with TomTom. Before EU tells the milititary to reduce its influence on politics it needs to consider the country's history and demographic structure. There are many people especially in the southeast region who want an islamic model of governance. The military is the only guarantee against such thoughts. By presuurising the army EU is contributing to the process of making Turkey a country being ruled by religious rules. I guess they are doing this on purpose so that they will achieve their aim of not accepting Turkey by claiming that it is an islamist country.
Samet Sozen, London,
We need free debates on religion wether it's in Turkey or in any other country in the world Debates like the ones Ahmed Deedat used to make with the missionaries so the west should start with that kind of free speech ..latter on the developing countries can follow.

''where in the USA can a Muslim go and pactice his faith without fear of being treated with contempt''
wow!! Are you isane? There's a big difference between contempt and throat slitting!
Turkey is still systematically trying to wipe out all traces of it's armenians, and it's still demolishing armenian churches or still converting them into mosques where they find them in the rural areas. They have still not acknowledged the genocide of millions of armenians in the early part of the century. Try imagining Germany denying it's Nazi past and the 'final solution'.
The greek orthodox version of the vatican in turkey is a mini fortress, being attacked regularly by militant muslims. And this is the turkey that wants to join Europe. There is a big difference between the tukey of the holiday resorts and the real turkey
Gabe, Dublin, Ireland
The Pope, Cardinals, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop Tutu and the U.N. must force an emergency U.N. conference on Religious freedom and tolerance with Islamic nations. Any country not signing on should face international sanctions and banishment. Muslims can go and freely worship proselytize in any country but in no Islamic nation can the same be done as far as I know. The intolerance of Islam is untenable and all civilized nations must ban Islamic immigrants as they then effectively poison any country they go to by acting like a social cancer that eats one way. Where they are a minority, even less than one percent like the Philipines, they wreak mayhem and violence, as they are doing in Cashmir area of India. In Nigeria, they regularly butcher Christians in the Northen Islamic part almost monthly. They impose Islamic regimes and restrictions but are not subject to the same in other countries. How about a Pat Robertson, a Cardinal or Rev. Billy Graham as U.S President?

Dear brothers and sisters in CHRIST, Pray for our fellow workers in the faith. To be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD. We are as christians here to glorify JESUS In the father. Weep for our own that GOD may be Glorified through our suffering for HIS name sake, and pray for those who persecute and even muder us. That they may be saved. Love them as you love GOD. James L.

I think Turkey needs to be congratulated on the way it has contained these radical muslims who murder and maim to install fear on the grounds of fanaticism,T h e attatude of the tukish army is outstanding and they should all be given the highest honour for standing up to these terroists in the name of freedom and peace ,in fact it should be an example to the world seeing asit is the only country to be succesfull in doing this , I hope they expose where these terrible terroists are coming from and who aids them !!1
jack, sydney,
Well grant guildford, while it may not be as easy to be a Muslim in the USA when compared to Turkey or even Egypt, the fact is there are many place "where in the USA can a Muslim go and pactice his faith without fear of being treated with contempt." This is not a high horse nor is it a defence of Christianity as the 'superior religon'. It is, however, an observation that there are readicals in every group and that Islam is struggling with these radicals. As far as entrance into the EU? What better mechanism to help prevent the complete radicalization of Turkey. Those who would want to prevent Trukey fro joining because of its location being mostly in Asia are promoting a form of nationalism. Turkey has been a good ally and neighbor. We would all do well to support this country as it continues to be a very real bridge between West and the East.
john , ashland,
Ataturk made the Turkish Youth the guardian of the secular democratic republic. Army interference has always been in the interests of US policy and right wing politicians.
US and EU backed islamic fundamentalist Erdogan and his AKP gained power with minority vote thanks to the corrupt electoral system brought in by the fascist Evren junta of 1980s. Islamic murderers seen yesterday in Malatya are being organised by the ruling AKP grassroots to impose religious restrictions and pressure on society in the run up to general elections due to take place in the next 4-5 months.
Only democratic change with a fairer electoral system will restore stability to Turkey.
A Akademir, Bishop's Stortford, UK
The Christ (Messiah) said "Many will come and kill you, because of me". The Apostles took courageous to spread the Good News". All were brutally killed except one, John. John lived his life mostly in Turkey, always looking over his back. Whether it be agnostics or the empire, he was always threatened for his belief in the scriptures (The Real Truth) of the bible and the coming of the Messiah. Polycarp was murdered in Smyrna (Izmir), His church is still there. People are going to stop spreading the message that Jesus is real? We were meant to do this. We are still His Apostles and whether Turkey joins the EU or not, our place is to do what our calling is. Some are to make bibles, some are to evangelize, some are to feed the poor. The list goes on and on what we as Christians are supposed to do. I love Turkey and have made many lifetime friends. When I return, I won't be afraid as fear itself is the devil. We should be comforting each other and reaching out to the lost.
Cheryl, Ca/USA,
Paul, you need to get out more, NYC is in no way representative of the USA. My point is simply, to the majority of Americans Islam is a dirty word that is synonymous with terrorist.
grant, guildford,
How can we be concerned? It's the Religion of Peace. This is the world that England, Germany, and Italy will soon enjoy. France already does.
Jim, Los Angeles, USA
Turkey has a consistent record of violations of Human Rights. The Orthodox Church has been a target, as well as minority groups in Constantinople (Istanbul), Clearly, Turkey is not an appropriate candidate for the EU. Turkey has been detrimental to the protection of citizens (ie the pogroms in the '50s & 70s). Since Turkey is in Asia Minor, and unable to secure decent human rights of all, the EU should stop the process on their application; and the UN should address these issues, quickly and of one mind, so the message is clear and firm. The continued violence and usurption of normal respect and dignity cannot be tolerated by a civilized world.
Jeanne, Cambrige, USA/Massachusetts
Grant you need to get out more! As an expat living in NYC I see lots of MUSLIMS freely practicing their religion without fear and contempt.
Paul, NYC ,
Who is WE? The fact that we know the goal of America is to secure the resources within the middle east doesn't change their stated objectives; - to promote democracy, this from the self proclaimed "leaders of the free world", under the direction of God. Nice one paul
michael, Australia,
Although I am off course not supporting any of the violance attack of muslims, I have to state that christians killed and raped Muslims in Bosnia herzegovina, and all developed countires just watched it. christians are killing civils in Iraq, in pakistan briefly in middle east. unfortunately nationalism is the ascendant value of nowadays. The biggest developed country in the world is threatining the peace of the world just to grow stonger by acquiring all the petroleum fields.. last saturday hundred thousands of people walked in Ankara(capital city of turkey)for a secular Turkey as they have presidential elections near by and they do not want to see a president from that islamic party. The great paradox is; the same most developed country is supporting the islamic party(AKP) in turkey!!!!peace in world for all of us...
sallyn, nottingham,
When will humans stop being attacked/killed for words that they say and beliefs that they embrace? Someone once said that the only thing required for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. In the universal moral code of humans it is evil to attack/kill another human in this manner. The root of attacking another for words and beliefs is fear. God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. These attacks are an embarrassment to the EU, and the quietness of this news report is embarrassing to Western Media.
Dave, Griswold, CT
This awful fact confirms that it would be an enormous mistake to admit Turkey into the european community. What do they have in common with the other europeans ?
Apart the fact that Turkey is for most of the territory in Asia and not in Europe islamism is more than a religion as it is in top of the thoughts of it adepts and influences their style of life which is completely different from ours. Let's leave them where they are.
Roberto Castellano, Salsomaggiore, Italy
I wouldn't get on your high hores too quickly, where in the USA can a Muslim go and pactice his faith without fear of being treated with contempt?
grant, guildford,
I wonder if much of the western news will cover this since clearly an assault weapons ban would not have stopped this attacker.
Paula, Valencia, USA/California
Western Europe, in becoming increasingly secular, is also becoming intolerant of evangelical Christianity, mainly because it sees such expressions of religion as dogmatic and intolerant. So, it is a disturbing matter to wonder how zealous and intolerant Turkish Islam will be viewed by the European Community.
The passionate Muslims who are willing to engage in threats to persons and property, are usually also dedicated to destroying democracy in favour of Islamist theocratic rule. Poor old Europe will soon be in a fix. Will it continue to tolerate intolerant movements which are devoted to the destruction of the politcal foundation upon which Europe itself rests? Hmmm.
John, Birmingham, UK
Ataturk made the Army guardians of the secular state; something wise heads would have done in Iraq.
The EU wants the Army out of politics; Erdogan agrees, so his Islamist Party can rule unfettered.
The Islamic Absolutists want to bring the Turkish State into alignment with Saudi Arabia and its religiosity; but it will end up like Pakistan and the military will have to step in and sort out the mess.
The Army is the only hope for stability, a real pity it was dissolved in Iraq; why must the EU attempt the same strategy in Turkey ?
TomTom, Leeds, England
So let me get this straight. Where on earth are Christians persecuting Muslims? Where on earth are Christians cutting the heads off of Muslims? Where in modern reformed evengelical missionary tactics that include assult rifles, bribes and corruptions to spread the good news of Christ? Nowwhere. So how come can in the Muslim world they can cut the heads off of Christians, march and amy into a town and shoot all who don't convert? Because we let them.
Paul Bahre, Granby, CT, USA
There is a hatred going on against us here in Turkey, but we are Turks and we belong here. Nevertheless we should show Jesus Christ's love to these people as well!
Aldemir, Istanbul, Turkey
